Centers of Excellence

Geographic and Management Information Systems

Apart from serving as a teaching and learning space, the Center for Geographic and Management Information Systems also supports research efforts and is working to produce maps and conducts short term certificate and diploma courses to generate income.
The centre seeks opportunities for further training and capacity building in GIS, Remote Sensing and Urban Development to ensure that centre staff are kept up-to-date with current trends and issues in these fields.

Urban Observatory

The Centre is also setting up the structures and modalities leading to the establishment of an Urban Observatory which will be a "specialised centre" responsible for data collection and analysis, statistics as well as information gathering in different areas of urban development.

The observatory will focus broadly on shelter, social development, environmental management, economic development, governance and poverty. More specifically, access to water, improvement in sanitation, connection to services, urban population growth, planned and unplanned settlements will be also examined.

Gender and Social Development

The main objective of the Centre is to enhance effective and efficient delivery of local government services for sustainable development through advocating gender sensitive planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation at ILGS and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly levels.

The Centre's overarching aim is to enhance the achievement of the Goverment of Ghana commitments under key international agreements including the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, Beijing Platform for Action and the Millennium Development Goals in order to deliver effective and efficient local services for sustainable and equitable development.

Local Economic Development

The Local Economic Development (LED) Centre of Excellence exists to undertake research, training, consultancy and related services mainly in Ghana with the purpose of building human and institutional capacity for economic growth and poverty reduction through a participatory local government system.
