A six member delegation from the Zimbabwean Local Government Board and the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, led by the Chief Director of the Office of the Head of Local Government Service, Mr. James Oppong-Mensah, paid a courtesy call to the Management and Staff of the  Institute of Local Government Studies on Tuesday, 21st June, 2022. The delegation led by the Permanent Secretary of the Mininstry of Local Government and Public Works, Mr. Z. R. Churu  was in Ghana for a benchmarking visit.
Prof. Nicholas Awortwi, the Director of ILGS, welcomed the delegation and briefed them on the Institute's mandate and functions in building capacities for local government  in Ghana and beyond. He also introduced the Graduate and Professional programmes the Institute offers and informed them of the Institute's plans of chartering into a full university in future.
The leader of the team expressed delight in the functions of the Institute and programmes offered. They assured the Management of future collaborations with the Institute

The Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) is a public management institute, established under Act 647 of 2003. It is mandated to organize the training of: both staff and members of the regional coordinating councils, district assemblies and other lower local government units to enhance the managerial, administrative, financial and operational efficiency of organs and units of local government.
The ILGS also runs four Masters level programmes in local government administration, local economic development, Public financial management and environmental science, policy and management as well as other short-term certificate and post graduate certificate courses.

The Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) has opened admissions for its, flagship Master’s Degree Programmes for the 2022/2023 academic year.

The four (4) programmes being mounted by the Innnnnnstitute are all relevant for professional career in local governance and development practice. These are:

  • Environmental Science, Policy and Management
  • Local Economic Development
  • Public Financial Management
  • A. Local Governance and Management.

The Institute is accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and affiliated with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). It also has standing relationship with other reputable international institutions of higher learning for world class instructions and learning.

The Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, has urged metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to deploy strategies that can help boost local economies and improve governance in municipalities, towns and villages across the country.

That, he said, would be a significant step towards fully harnessing the economic potential of the MMDAs to create jobs, generate income and reduce poverty.
